Monument Town Council: Draft 2027 Budget and a Parkway Update
At its Oct. 5 regular meeting, the Monument Town Council heard the draft 2027 budget, learned that the Jackson Creek Parkway bid moved to December, and accepted Conexus drainage land, all by 5-0 votes, per The Monument Independent. Leaders also talked water quality, land transfers, and major infrastructure agreements; The Gazette reports the council reviewed water quality as part of the same session. The council's next regular meeting is Oct. 19 at 6:30 p.m., with agendas and minutes posted on townofmonument.org.
Talk with the Town and the Planning Commission This Week
Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 6 p.m., Town Hall (645 Beacon Lite Road) hosts "Talk with the Town," the council's quarterly open meeting with residents, featuring a presentation on town finances, per The Monument Independent. A council candidate forum was also set for the Chamber. The Planning Commission holds its monthly meeting Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 6 p.m. at Town Hall. Both are open to the public, and the town's full calendar lives at townofmonument.org.
The Nov. 3 Ballot: Meet the Candidates
Monument's municipal election is Nov. 3, coordinated with El Paso County, and the candidate lineup is now set. The mayoral race pairs Laura Kronick against Kenneth Kimple; Dan DeBoo runs for the District 1 seat, Marco P. Fiorito for District 2, and Alex Valderrama and Scott Gilson compete for the at-large seat, per the town's elections page. Also on the ballot is the use-tax measure that would raise the tax on construction and building materials from 2% to 3.5%, projected to generate about $2.27 million a year for stormwater, streets, bridges, and sidewalks; it does not affect sales tax, per Colorado Politics. Ballots are already on their way to voters, so check your mailbox and the town's elections page for drop-off and polling details.
Halloween and the Rest of October
Safe Trick or Treat returns Saturday, Oct. 31 from 4 to 6 p.m. along 2nd Street, Limbach Park, and the surrounding downtown shops, a free community favorite that drew roughly 800 trick-or-treaters last year, per The Gazette. All October long, Papa's Italian Restaurant North is running "Pizza Give Back Month," with its limited-time Spicy Honey Pepperoni pizza supporting Tri-Lakes Cares. Also on the calendar: Tri-Lakes Cares' annual Empty Bowls dinner and silent auction Wednesday, Oct. 14 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Lewis-Palmer High School, Next Stop Comedy at Goat Patch Brewing Monument on Friday, Oct. 16 at 8 p.m., and the Tri-Lakes Community & Business Expo at the Tri-Lakes YMCA on Wednesday, Oct. 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., presented by the Tri-Lakes Chamber of Commerce.
District 38: An Online-School Partnership on the Table
At an Oct. 6 work session, the Lewis-Palmer D38 Board of Education weighed a potential partnership with Williamsburg Academy, a Colorado online school serving roughly 1,000 students, per the meeting record. Monday, Oct. 12 is a district-wide no-classes day on the D38 calendar, and the board continues to accept applications to fill the District 1 director seat after the resignation of Chris Taylor. Superintendent Amber Whetstine leads the district. For families watching school funding, the community campaign Yes for D38 remains active, noting that D38's voter-approved operating override has been flat at $4 million per year since 1999.
Woodmoor Improvement Association: Public Safety and the Community Calendar
The Woodmoor Improvement Association published its September Public Safety report: 83 dispatches, 1,372 business checks, and 938 vacation checks across the community. The WIA posts monthly newsletters and an events calendar at woodmoor.org/events, and the association's common areas, trails, and ponds remain a defining part of the Woodmoor lifestyle.
Fall on the Trails and Around Town
Mid-October is peak color season in Woodmoor. The Santa Fe Trailhead at 3rd Street offers parking and picnic tables with direct access to the Santa Fe Trail, and the Monument Preserve on Schilling Avenue threads trails through ponderosa pine forest. The roughly 17.9-mile New Santa Fe Regional Trail runs from Greenland Open Space near Larkspur to the Edmondson Trailhead in Colorado Springs, and Fox Run Regional Park's trails around Aspen Lake are a short drive away.
For coffee and a bite, Woodmoor's own Wesley Owens Coffee at 1744 Lake Woodmoor Drive remains a neighborhood favorite, joined by Coffee Cup Cafe at 251 Front Street and Arlene's Beans at 366 2nd Street downtown. For dinner, La Casa Fiesta at 230 Front Street, The Bistro on 2nd at 65 2nd Street, Rosie's Diner at 411 CO-105, and Papa Bear Pizza at 243 Washington Street round out the local lineup. Goat Patch Brewing Monument at 1756 Lake Woodmoor Drive remains the neighborhood gathering spot.
